Ocean, Weather & Climate Prediction

The lab’s longest-running thread, tracing back to PhD work on probabilistic regional ocean predictions with dynamically orthogonal level-set methods. Current work applies deep learning to correct systematic biases in global climate model (CMIP6) projections of sea surface temperature and dynamic sea level in the Bay of Bengal, detect coastal eddies from high-frequency radar, and model salinity variability in the Andaman Sea. This pillar is also where the emerging Neural Data Assimilation direction — physics-informed architectures for dynamical systems — is most directly applied.
